About The Artists

Robert Whiting

My interest in the Hudson River School is greatly influenced by Thomas Cole, Fredrick Church, and Asher Durand’s work and I have endeavored to combine this love of landscape painting and figurative work with my intense interest in trompe l’oeil painting.

Having been introduced to trompe l’oeil through the works of Harnett, van Hoogstraten, Peto, and most recently Haberle, I combine both landscape painting and my own particular brand of humor into most of my work.  My goal is to create greater illusions, reflecting more current themes while paying homage to the old masters. The objective is not only to deceive the viewer but to also entertain them with subtle humor and sometimes glimpses into my life. I will occasionally incorporate my image in a reflection, include family members names carved into woodwork, or animate one of the subjects in the work. Sometimes it’s so subtle that it’s easily missed.

Susan Bayard Whiting

I currently produce work both plein air and in studio work employing both alma prima and indirect painting methods. As a contemporary artist I enjoy the works of so many nineteenth century Impressionist artist such as Camille Corot and Pissarro. Their use of color to convey atmosphere and their color harmonies are what drove me to produce landscapes. Studying the bold brush work of John Singer Sargent and Mary Cassatt had provided me with an understanding for the use of color and allows me to use my training as a draftsman and technical illustrator to achieve the desired effect in my paintings.
